Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition 

Introduction

Since 1981, the Greater Bombay Science Teachers' Association has been organizing the Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition. This unique four-stage event is designed to ignite curiosity, promote problem-solving abilities, and develop precision in observational and motor skills among young scientists. Additionally, the competition seeks to raise students' awareness of their environment and encourage them to take thoughtful, rational actions when needed.

The Dr. Homi Bhabha Exam is a great way for students to strengthen their science knowledge and build a solid foundation. For those in 6th and 9th grades, it also provides valuable preparation for the IIT and NEET entrance exams.

About Exam

  • Students in 6th and 9th grades are eligible to take this exam.
  • The exam is open to students from both Marathi and English mediums.
  • Students from all boards (Maharashtra SSC, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other state boards) can participate.

Stages of Competition

  1. Written Examination
  2. Practical Round
  3. General Interview
  4. Action Research project

Details Competition

PHASE - I

  • 100 multiple-choice questions covering science and general knowledge in science, tailored to the appropriate grade level.
  • Duration 90 minutes and Maximum Marks 100

The top 7.5% of students from each region will be selected based on merit.

  • This includes students from Marathi medium.
  • English medium students from the Maharashtra SSC Board.
  • English medium students from all other boards.

Certificates:

  • Selected students will receive a Merit Certificate.
  • Remaining passing students will be awarded a Passing Certificate.

PHASE - II

For VI Standard

  • Number of Experiments: 5 and Marks per Experiment: 6
  • Total Marks: 30 and Duration: 30 minutes

For IX Standard

  • 1 Experiment each for Physics and Chemistry
  • Maximum marks - 10 and  Duration 10 minutes each 
  • Biology : 10 questions based on 10 Specimens
  • Maximum marks - 10 and  Duration 10 minutes

Selection of III & IV Phase

  • Calculation of Final Score: 30% of the marks obtained in Phase I plus the marks obtained in Phase II will be considered.
  • Selection for Phases III and IV: The top 10% of students, based on merit, will be selected

PHASE - III

  • General interview
  • Duration 5 to 7 minutes
  • Maximum Marks 30

PHASE - IV

  • Project Report Submission: All students who submit a project report will be called for an interview.
  • Interview Panel: Students will be interviewed by a panel from the MSTA Committee.

SELECTION FOR MEDALS

  • Calculation: Selection is based on 30% of the marks from Phase I combined with the total marks from Phases II, III, and IV.
  • Duration 5 to 7 minutes

Certificates:

  • Gold Medal: Awarded to the top 10% of candidates based on merit, along with a certificate and a scholarship of Rs. 3000/-
  • Silver Medal: Awarded to the next 60% of candidates, along with a certificate and a scholarship of Rs. 2000/-
  • Bronze Medal: Awarded to the remaining candidates, along with a certificate and a scholarship of Rs. 1000/-.

SYLLABUS

For VI std. Exam Syllabus:

  • Questions will be based on the 4th, 5th, and 6th standard textbooks of the Maharashtra State Board, as well as relevant content from ICSE, IB, and CBSE books.
  • 4th Standard Syllabus: Approximately 10% of the questions will be based on this syllabus.
  • 5th Standard Syllabus: Approximately 20% of the questions will be based on this syllabus.
  • 6th Standard Syllabus: Approximately 60% of the questions will be based on this syllabus.
  • General Knowledge in Science: Approximately 10% of the questions will cover general knowledge in science.
